FAQs about Tooth Sensitivity

Find out more about this common issue and how you can reduce these symptoms.

Tooth sensitivity can be a major pain (no pun intended!). Having to worry about what foods and drinks you consume is no fun, sensitive teethparticularly for sufferers of sensitivities. If you are dealing with this problem then chances are good that you have questions. From the office of your Tallahassee, FL dentists Dr. James Walton and Dr. David Cardman, here are some of the most frequently asked questions about tooth sensitivity.

What is tooth sensitivity?

The first layer of the tooth is called enamel. This hard layer protects the tooth from damage and certain extreme temperatures. But when the enamel is damaged or worn thin it exposes the dentin, which can cause tooth sensitivity. Exposed tooth roots can also cause this issue.

What causes tooth sensitivity?

Because the dentin is now exposed it leaves your teeth more susceptible to sensitivity issues. This can happen when the tooth is exposed to heat, cold or something sweet. Sometimes even brushing your teeth can cause sensitivity.

When should I see my Tallahassee family dentist?

If you are experiencing tooth sensitivity for the first time then it’s always a good idea to come in for an exam so we can rule out other possible causes of tooth pain.

What can be done to treat this problem?

Depending on the cause of your tooth sensitivity, one or a combination of all of these options may be recommended to you:

  • Desensitizing toothpaste: This will take a few applications before you start to feel the effects of using this kind of toothpaste but it can often be all that’s needed for those with minor sensitivity.
  • Fluoride treatment: We may recommend coming in for fluoride treatments or we may prescribe fluoride to use at home.
  • Dental bonding: Sometimes applying tooth-colored dental resin (used for filling a tooth) can be applied to sensitive surfaces to reduce or eliminate sensitivity.
  • Gum graft: If tooth root exposure is the cause of your sensitivity then a gum graft may be recommended. During a gum graft, we will take a small amount of tissue from somewhere in the mouth and attach it to the affected area to cover exposed roots.
  • Root canal: If your severe pain and sensitivity is caused by an infected pulp then a root canal treatment will be advised so we can go in and remove the pulp and save the tooth.

Don’t let tooth sensitivity affect your daily life; turn to your general dentist in Tallahassee first. Let Dr. Walton provide you with the ultimate dental care that caters to all your needs.
